About the Tech Talk

AI Based Wildfire Detection and Management:Climate change has magnified the threat of catastrophic wildfires, bringing drier conditions, stronger winds, and higher temperatures that make fire season longer and more dangerous. Traditionally, wildfire detection and confirmation have been a slow and manual process, involving a bystander seeing a fire, calling 911, and then dispatching a single fire engine to locate and assess the fire. This process no longer works because it takes too much time, and during that time the fires grow too big too fast. Innovative fire agencies are moving to a new approach known as early detection and rapid initial attack, where local fire agencies quickly locate fires after ignition and call in heavy resources to put the fire out before it becomes a threat. Machine learning is crucial to this new approach.

This talk will discuss the application of machine learning techniques to accelerate early detection. Central to this implementation is a network of mountaintop cameras that rotate 360 degrees every minute, sending images of the monitored geography to the cloud. Fires are detected using deep learning-based object detection methods with input from the camera network. This talk will cover how the system works, general machine learning solutions that have been applied to smoke detection, key issues, and the future roadmap.
